The Notability Blues
Margaret D. Foster (1895–1970) was an American chemist who worked on the United States Geological Survey and the Manhattan Project. But that didn’t stop an editor in 2017 from flagging Foster’s page for notability concerns and probable deletion.
My latest for Source Notes explores how Wikipedia's "notability" rule can make it harder to create entries about lesser-known but important women from history. Slate published "The Notability Blues" yesterday and I appeared on KCBS All News radio San Francisco this morning to discuss.
Q&A: Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight has been influential in pushing for more gender diversity on Wikipedia. I interviewed Stephenson-Goodknight for OneZero, Medium's new tech and science publication. We discussed the "Women in Red" movement and her 555-year (!) vision for the encyclopedia.
